Different Types of Ballet Jumps That Can Be Used As Peritions On The Main Stage
Ballet Jumps is a series of upper body movements, which is performed in a graceful fashion. This is an important component of ballet dance and requires the dancer to have excellent coordination between the upper and lower body. It is one of the most complex upper body movements in ballet and also one of the most difficult for beginners to learn. There are many different types of ballet jumps, each requiring different skills. We will look at some of them here.
The extensions are the large muscle groups that run from the top of the torso, across the body and back down again. They are used in many of the body movements, such as turns, leaps and also the pizzicato, and they are particularly effective when the dancer is trying to execute leaps. This type of jump uses the entire musculature of the legs and thighs and is a very difficult skill to achieve.
Contractions: These are short, fast and athletic movements in which the dancer exerts maximal effort. The contractions used in the ballet jumps are relatively short, lasting only a fraction of a second, but these can be repeated many times without losing speed. They require good balance and agility and are ideally suited to dancers who have good muscle tone. The lunge uses the large muscles of the legs in an explosive fashion to move the feet quickly towards the target. The step-leg leap is a slow and controlled movement that requires good balance and leg strength.
Ballet releve: These are mini-acts that are performed on the floor. They are very small in comparison to normal ballet jumps but still require good body weight. They are executed by keeping one’s feet together and stepping into a lunge. A step-leg jump is performed exactly the same but stepping outwards from the outside of the left foot. A couple of steps are taken, with the toes still being locked in place, and the body is moved forwards so that one leg is in front of the other.
Power Step Jumping: This is considered one of the hardest jumps for a novice to execute and is usually carried out with the assistance of a professional. The purpose of this jump is to reach a height that is harder to achieve than the ground, commonly over half a meter. The body has to be strong enough to carry out the upwards momentum for a few seconds, whilst maintaining the balance and speed. This is harder than any other jump.
Spring Jumps: These are the most common type of jump. They are carried out by using the natural muscular power of the body rather than concentrating solely on leg muscles. The effort is more evenly distributed over the body as it tries to increase the velocity of the move from zero to one. In order to carry this out successfully, all the muscles must remain perfectly balanced. In order to perform these jumps correctly, it is essential that a proper balance is achieved between the upper and lower body. The springs or struts that connect the legs to the body must be perfectly aligned.
