Ballet Xmas – Classic Holiday Classics

Ballet Xmas

Every holiday season, ballet companies around the world present a classic ballet in an effort to entertain and connect with their audiences. Often, these productions are inspired by ballet’s past, but are reimagined for a modern audience.

This year, the New York City Ballet is bringing back its iconic Balanchine version of The Nutcracker in 2022. The company is also reviving the story with a new spin, based on Norman Rockwell Christmas aesthetics.

The ballet tells the story of Clara and her toy nutcracker, who magically comes to life on Christmas Eve and leads her on adventures across a winter wonderland. She meets the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Rat King and other mythical characters.

There is a lot to love about The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s score is neat and precise, and the choreography is beautifully executed.

Another classic that will never go out of style is Cinderella, which was first performed in 1890 and is still a popular choice for ballet companies at this time of the year. This ballet isn’t as traditional or festive as some of the other ballets in this list, but its beautiful music and characters make it a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the magic of the holidays.

Ballet dancers undergo a lot of training, which can involve long hours of practice and physical exertion. This is a difficult and demanding career for many people, but it’s an important one. In 2017, two ballet dancers founded the Final Bow for Yellowface campaign, a national movement to remove outdated portrayals of Asians and foster more inclusive spaces in ballet.
