There is an enticing mix of dance genres and styles at the current season of Ballet USA. The performance will feature four ballets created in the United States, including a new work by Erin McLaughlin. The evening will open with the Grand Defile, a tradition of the Paris Opera Ballet, which features the youngest students from the Yvonne Chouteau School, moving up to the principal dancers of the company.
The American Ballet was founded in 1934 by Lincoln Kirstein and Edward Warburg, with George Balanchine as the artistic director. The company made its debut at the Hartford Opera House in 1935. A year later, the company was appointed the resident ballet company of the Metropolitan Opera. The company’s choreography, however, was disapproved by the Met, and the company was temporarily dissolved. The American Ballet is now based in San Francisco, California, and consists of 32 professional dancers from 14 countries.
In 2000, Misty Copeland, a retired American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer, and Joseph Phillips, a former colleague, founded the Swans for Relief organization. The organization raises funds for ballet dancers worldwide by organizing auctions for clothes, shoes, and other essentials. The company relies on revenue from performances, but ballet dancers do not receive a paycheck, and face challenges buying food, housing, and other necessities.
