Ballet Quad Cities is one of the Quad Cities area’s top performing arts organizations. They perform both classical and modern dance. The group is also known for their educational outreach programs.
Bringing the arts to young people in the Quad Cities is their mission and they’ve been doing so for more than two decades now. They offer classes in Creative Movement, Ballet, Pointe, Conditioning and Jazz. They also teach children to appreciate the beauty of dance and the strength needed to be a ballerina.
Their newest program is called LEAP! This gives kids an opportunity to learn the craft of choreography while acquiring leadership, expression and attention skills. These are the “soft skills” that they will need throughout their lives and will be invaluable to them when they enter a workplace, in college or anywhere else that requires teamwork.
They’ve got some great dances to offer this season. Besides the traditional classics like Swan Lake, they’ll have a few new pieces. They’ve got a contemporary, contemporary/folkloric Carmen with Courtney Lyon and a piece for two couples with guest choreographer Domingo Rubio.
Hiplet combines the traditional art of ballet with African, Latin, and hip-hop dance styles that are rooted in communities of color. This fusion was originally created to make ballet accessible to everyone by mixing it with popular songs that people would recognize.
A new version of Romeo and Juliet is airing on Iowa Public Television this week, thanks to a collaboration with Ballet Quad Cities. This version is less melodramatic and provides more background, according to artistic director Laura Kreszenz.
