If you are a fan of classical ballet, you may want to check out Ballet on Netflix. The story follows an aspiring dancer named Misty Copeland, who was released from the company before achieving the status of principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater. This inspiring story follows the struggle of an underdog to break the boundaries of her community and become an internationally recognized dancer. The film features interviews with Copeland and other black women.
The film also follows six talented young dancers as they compete for a place in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix in New York City. Most of them dream of pursuing a career in ballet, and the documentary follows them as they pursue their dreams. Some of the young stars of Ballet on Netflix have gone on to enjoy professional careers: Michaela DePrince, a soloist at the Dutch National Ballet, Aran Bell, Miko Fogarty, and Joan Sebastian Zamorța are now with the Joffrey Ballet.
The movie also tackles the difficult issues of racial equity in the ballet industry. While ballet has done a good job of ensuring racial equity in schools and professional companies, some actors have failed to get a fair shake. “Black Swan” illustrates this in a realistic way, focusing on young dancers pushing through injuries. It also addresses racial discrimination in ballet, something that is often neglected in modern culture.
