Ballet Leotards

A high-quality leotard is a must for any dancer. It should fit like a second skin, not dig in or be so tight that it limits movement. The material should also be durable enough to withstand sweat, repeated washes and other forms of stress, such as stretching. The right material can help a dancer achieve their goals, whether they are practicing for a recital or working on a difficult pose. The most common type of ballet leotard is made from cotton with an elastane blend to ensure flexibility and stretch.

A wide variety of styles are available for any dancer. Some leotards feature a zip front to make it easier to put on, while others have cap sleeves to show off the shoulders and upper arms. Some leotards have a halter neckline, similar to the necklines found on high-street fashions, which is very flattering for most women and girls. Other styles include a tank leotard, which is comfortable and easy to put on. Tanks can be plain or have stripes, ruching or a pattern that enhances the shape and creates interest. Some have thick shoulder straps that give more stability for larger busted dancers, while a mock neck leotard, which is similar to a turtleneck, offers extra coverage and can emphasise a student’s posture.

A v-neck or sweetheart neckline is shaped into the letter ‘V’ in front, and can be flattering for any body shape. Some are a little more conservative, with a neckline that is like a Valentine’s Day heart. The pinched-front leotard is a good option for dancers with slimmer figures as it can help to add definition to the waist.
