Ballet Intensives 2021

While the Red Sox and New England Patriots may receive the bulk of the attention in Beantown, Boston is a dance mecca. The city’s Brookline Ballet School offers a five-week Summer Intensive for students of all levels who want to train in the city. The program includes daily classes in ballet, pointe and men’s class as well as contemporary and modern dance and body conditioning. Students perform in an informal livestreamed performance on the last day.

For aspiring professional ballet dancers, ABT’s in-person intensive is a unique opportunity to dive into one of the world’s most rigorous professional training programs. Dancers train under the guidance of ABT’s year round faculty and acclaimed guest teachers and prepare for a culminating demonstration and performance. The program is highly selective and requires audition.

The five-week program focuses on ballet technique, partnering and performance preparation. The curriculum is augmented by a variety of other disciplines including improvisation, contemporary and character dance. Dancers are also offered a variety of wellness workshops covering subjects like stress management, nutrition and injury prevention.

In a climate of COVID-19 uncertainty, many intensives are expanding their virtual offerings. This allows students to stay in the studio while remaining safe and keeping their summer dance plans intact. Additionally, many programs are providing on-site housing and commuter options in addition to their virtual components. Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts, for example, is offering both on-site and virtual options in a cabin-style setting on a wooded campus.
